When does a consumer unit need replacing?
Not every old board needs to go. These are the signs that it genuinely does:
- Rewireable fuses (fuse wire) rather than circuit breakers
- A plastic enclosure in a domestic property under the current regulations
- No RCD protection on socket or lighting circuits
- Nuisance tripping that has never been properly traced
- Signs of heat damage, scorching or a burning smell
- You are adding a heat pump, EV charger or solar PV and the board has no spare capacity
Do it once, do it with everything else
If a heat pump, EV charger or solar installation is on your list, the consumer unit work is far cheaper done at the same time. Because we carry out the heating and the electrical work ourselves, we assess the whole load once and give you a single quote rather than three.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
A straightforward domestic replacement is normally a single day, including testing and certification. If remedial work is found on existing circuits during testing we will tell you before we proceed.
Will my power be off all day?
The supply is off for the changeover itself. We plan around that and tell you the expected window in advance.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. As an NICEIC Approved Contractor we issue the Electrical Installation Certificate and notify the work under Part P.
